Delegation of Harvard University alumni visits NAVTTC for briefing on TVET Sector of Pakistan

A 27 member delegation of Harvard University alumni led by Mr. Muhammad Ali visited NAVTTC Headquarters, Islamabad today and met NAVTTC Chairman Syed Javed Hassan and Executive Director Dr. Nasir Khan. The Chairman, briefed the delegation about the challenges faced by Pakistan with regards to skilling the young population. He highlighted the government’s initiatives for development of skills sector and bringing it at par with the international standards as well as meeting requirements of the industry. In this regard, active participation of the industry is crucial for which we are closely working with various chambers of commerce and industries. NAVTTC has established Sector Skills Councils to bridge the gap between industry and training providers. The chairman also highlighted that the share of trained females in our labour force needs to be improved in order for the economy to move forward.

Executive Director Dr. Nasir Khan briefed the delegation about initiatives taken by NAVTTC and said that our job portal provides data of trained persons which is readily available for employers. CPEC is a tremendous opportunity for Pakistan and we are focusing on skills which are most suited for CPEC projects. The establishment of Centers of Excellence will also pave the way for modernizing our TVET sector and bringing it in line with the latest needs of the industry. He apprised the delegation about the newly enacted Apprenticeship Act 2018 which covers all sectors of economy even the informal sector which is quite significant in case of Pakistan. This Act will enable us to align training institutes with industry. NAVTTC has ensured that females also acquire technical trainings. Out of the 200,000 youth trained by NAVTTC, 60000 were females. The Harvard delegation had a number of queries as well as suggestions drawing from their international experience which the NAVTTC leadership welcomed. The head of the delegation, Mr. Ali praised the vital contribution of NAVTTC in promoting the skill sector of Pakistan.
